INVOLVING THE COMMUNITY IS ESSENTIAL

This publication highlights one of the many possible paths for the exercise of citizen science, taking as its focus the coping with the proliferation of the mosquito vector of serious illnesses, such as zika, chikungunya, dengue, and urban yellow fever. In fact, these diseases are affecting the health – and many times taking the lives – of thousands of people around the world. It presents the possibility of citizen participation in AeTrapp – Citizen Monitoring of Aedes Mosquitoes, a tool that promotes the protagonism of communities in monitoring the proliferation of these mosquitoes.

Throughout the text, three dimensions of citizen participation are detailed: individual, public, and social. The data obtained with the monitoring of foci of mosquitoes may subsidize the implementation of public policies of population control of Aedes aegypti in the most vulnerable regions and, furthermore, strengthen the performance of the population into spaces of social participation on public health.

Monitoring the proliferation of Aedes aegypti by the communities instrumentalizes them in their arguments, for offering concrete data on the proliferation of the vector of serious diseases in the area where they live.

But how to involve people – professionals from different areas of public power and the population in general – with the monitoring of Aedes through AeTrapp?

With this involvement as a challenge, we suggest in this publication activities that can be carried out by professionals who work in municipal public power and others that can be practiced by educators, especially in high school. The intent is that, through sharing, inspire many other practices that make the effective monitoring of mosquitoes proliferation by the population, especially the most vulnerable, a reality.
